I was hired as a systems analyst, to be contracted out to other computer shops. I was initially contracted to United Carolina Bank in Monroe, NC for two months using an IBM 3031, running the OS/VS2 operating system and using TSO. This was extended by a month, and my duties widened from assisting one project leader to assisting two project leaders. Some of the work was performed using COBOL and some using PL/1.
I then designed, wrote, and documented a complete laboratory test system for Trane Service/First, Inc. This system maintains a complete history for air conditioner units under service. Most information is captured from a spectrometer, with additional information entered from terminals connected to a Series/1. Reports for each performed test are printed - including some graphs which are produced by a Tektronix 4051 microcomputer directly attached to the Series/1. An extensive data retrieval capability is incorporated in the system which comprises about 25,000 lines of code in EDX under RPS.
As my next assignment, I connected a Series/1 with attached diskette magazine unit to a S/370 for the Rock Hill telephone company. I wrote programs to handle the data transfer and communication requirements at both ends of the communication link. Direct control of the Series/1 diskette magazine was required to meet the system specifications. The basic intent of the system is to read/write/format all types of IBM supported diskettes for data transfer between customers.
My last project was to assist in the conversion of a bank purchased by the Peoples Bank and Trust to their format. This consisted of routine COBOL conversion programs. There were no problems encountered during the actual conversion.
While at Broadway and Seymour, Inc. I learned EDX, TSO, TONE and IDOL.
I was originally employed by Business Systems Consultants, Inc. which was sold to Broadway & Seymour, Inc. in June 1982.
When Business Systems Consultants, Inc. was purchased, the direction of the company changed, so that they no longer needed the type of expertise I was able to provide, but needed instead people who had specialized more in the purely financial applications (banking especially). I therefore left and took my accrued vacation and decided to try finding a small company in the mountains for a different lifestyle.
After I left Broadway & Seymour, Inc., Trane Service/First, Inc. required an extension of the laboratory system. They were referred to me by Broadway Seymour, Inc. for a short term contract since this was the type of work which Broadway & Seymour, Inc. no longer desired.
